What We Are

The Umami Post is a community food publication. We are independent, reader-supported, and free to use. Every line of the website is open source. Every recipe is licensed Creative Commons so cooks can copy, adapt, and republish without asking.

We publish tested recipes, technique guides, reviews of cookbooks and equipment, and food journalism. We cover the systems that bring food to the table -- farms, supply chains, kitchens, and the people who work in them.

Why We Exist

Most food media is owned by people who do not cook for a living and answer to advertisers who do not eat the food they sponsor. The result is a stream of content engineered for engagement rather than the dinner table. Recipes do not get tested. Equipment reviews repeat the press release. Restaurants get covered as theater.

We exist because we think the people who actually cook should run the publication that covers cooking. Every contributor on this site is a cook. Every recipe we run is tested in a real kitchen. Every review is written by someone who used the thing, not by someone who unboxed it.

What We Stand For

We test before we publish. We credit cooks by name. We name where a recipe came from, even when that means saying 'we adapted this from someone else.' We label dietary restrictions clearly. We tell you when something is hard, and we tell you when it is not.

We treat readers as adults. Cooking has a learning curve. We are willing to explain why a technique works, not just describe what to do.

What We Will Not Do

We do not publish sponsored content. We do not accept advertising from food brands we review. We do not allow funders, if we ever have them, to influence editorial decisions. We do not publish AI-generated copy.

We do not present opinion as testing or testing as opinion. When we get a recipe wrong, we update the recipe and log the correction on the page.
